Here is Some Place Else (2024) is a short documentary-style digital film that unfolds the social and personal narratives hidden in landscape, exploring lost places, the idea of home, and acts of memory. The footage was filmed in the surrounds of a lignite surface mine in Saxony (Germany), in the kitchen of a family home nearby, and in the collections department of a German national museum in Bonn.

Cuttings is a video work that arose out of artistic research undetaken at a 2021 residency at The Watch residency at Schlesischer Busch park in Berlin. Through the quick juxtoposition of clips the work scans through the layers of history, often contested, that construct the space of the park.

The photographic work Cuttings III was temporarily installed as a poster on the outside of the residency location in 2021, a former East Berlin border tower now situated in a municipal park, with the duration of the exhibition determined by weathering and vandalism.

The work is positioned on an informal narrative bridge between Caspar David Friedrich’s painting “Two Men Contemplating The Moon” (1819-20) and an apocryphal anecdote relating to Samuel Beckett.

The work visually explores the undercurrents to be found in popular German Heimat films of the post-war period, uncovering hidden image-memory buried deep within the romantic naratives and idyllic scenes.

An artist’s novella which utilises sci-fi and pulp fiction literary modes as a method to approach post-colonial critique of the European ethnographical museum. A key historical starting point was the work of French caver and chronobiologist Michel Siffre.

The lightly constructed sculptural assemblage from wood, acylic glass, mirror and painted card was illuminated by a programmed array of lights in slow but constant flux, with the work’s shifting, dissolving and emerging forms and shadows generating a continiously changing dramaturgy.

The photographic triptych  represents three large museological displays of religious sculptural artefacts from the 'Africa Rooms' of the former Ethnological Museum in Dahlem, Berlin. The museum no longer exisits and its collections have since been incorporated into the Humboldt Forum.

The International Summer Camp took place from 29 May to 7 June as part of the ZEKIWA Zeitz Real-World Laboratory (RZZ) and was organised by the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. I was the project manager for the Summercamp, co-leading it with the Programme Director.

Irish Energy was an exhibition of contemporary Irish artists in Berlin in 2024, which had as its departure point the connections of the Germany artist Joseph Beuys to Ireland, taking its name from one of the artist’s sculptures. The exhibition touched upon topics of landscape, ecology, shamanism, magic and socio-political agency. I was involved in the preliminary curatorial work (conceptual framework and identification of artists). Sheena Malone was the principle curator.

Zeitgeist Irland 24
Year-long cultural programme

Zeitgeist Ireland 24, was a year-long cultural programme of Irish contemporay arts, presernted across Germany in 2024. As Assistant Cultural Officer at the Embassy of Ireland I was centrally involved in the development and implementation of the programme. It involved the facilitation and promotion of 153 projects, consisting of several hundred individual events and artists across all creative fields.

A curatorial project I co-curated with artist Dominique Hurth, that archived and represent products of contemporary art practices evolving within printed and published formats. It presented a curated selection of over 75 artist’s publications and related projects. There were also numerous temporary manifestations in the form of reading rooms, exghibtions, salons, talks, readings and lecture-performances.

A curatorial commission funded by County Carlow’s ‘Visualise’ temporary arts scheme, as an advance programme to the opening of a new national-level contemporay art museum in the town. As curator, I invited artist Sarah Browne to engage with socio-economic themes related to the town and create an accessible artwork.

A temporary public art curatorial commission funded under County Carlow’s Percent-for-Art scheme (Ireland). As curator, I invited artist and educator Glenn Loughran to concieve of a socially-engaged arts project with local rural youth. Informed by the ideas of Paulo Freire, Loughran built a temporary schoolhouse and oversaw a creative programme.
